About Sheridan Publishing

Mission Statement | Join our team! | Current Teams

Who we are–and aren’t

Sheridan Publishing was founded in 1996 in the small but enticing town of Kaysville, Utah. With over two decades of background in editing, we focused for the first four years primarily on providing editorial services and consulting for a variety of individuals and publishers.

In January 2001, we decided to shift gears and offer some services that we observed were sorely needed in the arena of personal and family histories. It took several months to recreate Sheridan Publishing, but when we were finished we realized that we had put together one of the most needed and innovative services available for our niche in the Internet world.

Sheridan Publishing now offers a quality line-up of printing services for personal and family histories, including proofreading, indexing, scanning both text and visuals, designing of both covers and internal book content, and, finally, producing the actual book. We ship direct to our customers so can lower overhead by not requiring warehousing. But most of all, we offer quality printing for family historians at very affordable prices!

Wait–There’s More!

Sheridan Publishing is about more than printing personal, family, and community histories, however. We also offer to our fellow book lovers some of the world’s timeless literature in both e-book and print formats. And we are shooting for mid–2002 to open up our publishing arm to some fresh voices, people who have a thing or two to say but haven’t been able to attract the attention of the “big boys” in the publishing world. Keep your eyes on our site–we think you’ll like what we have in mind.

Ah, Yes, the Disclaimer

What we do, we do very well. We are proud of our name and what it represents to the industry. So please do not confuse us with the fine folks at the Sheridan Group or its companies, including the Sheridan Press, Sheridan Books, Inc., and Sheridan Reprints. By comparison, we are a relatively young company; however, our executive board are in no sense newcomers to the publishing business. Our clients have ranged from first-time authors to international best sellers, from self-publishers to well-established publishing houses on both American coasts.

There are a few services that we don’t offer. For example, we do not do your original research. We will not verify the quality of your research, nor can we be held liable for it, although we can suggest extremely qualified, nationally recognized authorities who do perform that service. And we provide ghost writers for only the rarest of projects–writing can be an expensive proposition, and our focus is on making the printing of such histories as affordable as possible. That having been said, if you have a particular need and sufficient resources, drop us a line and we’ll talk.

We at Sheridan Publishing have two immediate goals:

1. Provide a cost-effective avenue for people to print and distribute their personal and family histories.
Seven centuries ago Dante wrote: “Consider your origins: you were not made that you might live as brutes, but so as to follow virtue and knowledge” (Inferno, xxvi.118). In this age of digital mania, we believe that certain core values must be held aloft just as they have in each transitional period throughout the history of the world. One of these is the sense of who we are–individually and collectively. We believe there is great value in learning of, considering, and preserving our origins, but traditional publishing often makes this financially impractical for the average person. Our primary goal is to change that by offering an affordable avenue for publishing personal and family histories.

2. Publish select works of moral value that have entered the public domain
Our online bookstore offers some of the great classics of world literature, ranging from religious texts such as the Bhaghavad Gita and the Koran to social commentary such as Thoreau’s Walden or Milton’s Aereopagatica. As noted above, certain core values have helped bring the people of the world’s great civilizations through the transitions that both enabled and destroyed the civilizations themselves. We believe we have a responsibility to share those values with concerned individuals today as we enter yet another pivotal era in our world history.

In addition to these immediate goals, as we grow we will pursue two related courses of action:
• Provide an avenue for fresh, strong voices to publish works of moral value and to make those works accessible to a wide audience.

• Provide an avenue for honest income to skilled contract workers, and provide an avenue for developing such skills. For more on our philosophy about this, see Join Our Team.

That’s just to excite your tastebuds–just keep your eyes on our site for future developments.

Join Our Team

At Sheridan Publishing, we love books! But the financial benefits are minimal to those who do the pick and shovel work of bringing an authorıs work into readable, attractive print. We have purposefully taken a sort of “cottage industry” approach to our process of producing personal and family histories. We particularly invite those to join us who need to supplement their regular income with work in the home: the mother who wants to stay home with her young children yet wonders what to do with her love for literature, the father who needs to supplement his income but doesnıt want to leave his family for a second job outside his home, the college student who needs flexible hours and an avenue to refine innate skills, the experienced retired individual who is not yet ready to give up on making contributions or making a few extra bucks to help the children or grandchildren out. We want to help those who love books as we do to learn, refine, and productively use their skills.
